Smartbook Reviews
www.SmartbookReviews.co.uk will become the primary UK website for Smartbook reviews once they are available to buy in the UK. Smartbooks are due to be launched later in 2009. Asus are currently the only company to have released preview models while HTC, Toshiba, Inventec, Wistron and more are all said to be releasing models in 2009/2010.
What is a Smartbook?
Smartbooks are set to enter the market strategically placed between smart phones and so-called netbooks. Smartbooks will take the best features of a netbook and smartphone and combine them in a single unit. Their main features and selling points will be mobility, connectivity and battery life. Once a number of models available, we will be writing smartbook reviews for all of the best models.
Smartbook Specifications
Exact smartbook specifications will differ from device to device, however it is anticipated that most models will benefit from the following features:-
• Wifi
• 3G mobile broadband
• Bluetooth
• High Definition (HD) video |
- Instant-on power
- Touch screen interface
- Built-in GPS
- Integrated web-camera
|
It may well be that more features are added in time, and these will be commented upon in our smartbook reviews as and when they are written and published on this site.
Smartbook Battery Life
Smart books will use Qualcomm Snapdragon processors which are effectively enhanced mobile phone processors. Storage will be purely solid state (memory cards rather than hard drives) which means there will be no moving parts and therefore no need for a fan. Not only does this mean they will be almost silent when in use, but there will be no need for a fan. Qualcomm claim that a smartbook battery life will be ‘all day’ with ‘weeklong standby time’ – impressive!
Smartbook Deals
Like netbooks and cheap laptops, it is expected that you will be able to find some great smartbook deals not long after launch. Mobile phone networks and resellers are likely to bundle smartbooks in to a contract with either inclusive mobile phone talk time and/or mobile broadband data usage. Our smartbook reviews will take in to consideration the best deals available both buying the smartbook outright, and also getting free ones as part of a contract.
Smartbook Prices
In the first few months following launch, smartbook prices are expected to be similar to that of current netbooks. However, once the excitement has settled the prices of such smartbooks are likely to fall to the £100-£200 mark it has been reported.
